Web design mistakes that are hurting your search engine ranking

It does not matter whether you offer exclusive Thai massages or you operate a yoga business, the importance of good website design and effective SEO cannot be underestimated. However, what a lot of people don’t realise is that the two go hand-in-hand. If your website is not designed effectively, it could be having a negative impact on your search engine result page ranking. Let’s take a look at the common web design errors that have a negative impact on SEO…

1. Text in images

This is one of the most common mistakes business owners and amateur web designers make. They include text in the image, instead of overlaying HTML-based text. Why is this an issue? Well, Google cannot view an image in the same way as we can. If the text is not separate, in Google’s eyes, there is no text at all.

2. Missing H1 Title tags

This is a simple error, but one that is very costly. You can have the most visually impressive website in your sector, but if no one can find it, your site is simply wasted. This is exactly what happens when H1 Title tags are forgotten about. The H1 Title tag is the first thing that search engine crawlers are on the lookout for when determining what your webpage is about.

3. Large images and media files

Large images and media files can slow your website down, and this impacts SEO. Contrary to what a lot of people believe, SEO isn’t just about keywords – it’s about website experience. If your website is slow, this hinders experience, which, in turn, means that you will rank lower. We use special image optimisation software to avoid these problems, so whenever an image is uploaded its automatically resized and optimised to the smallest possible size without losing any quality and for the fastest possible download.

4. Thin content

If you want to rank higher for your target keywords, you need to have relevant, original, and engaging content on your website. Common mistakes include having one page that lists numerous products and services, not having a product or service page, and having too little text on your service and product pages. Its better to have a separate page for each of your services and if you can have over 300 words on each page and an image.

Do any of the mistakes mentioned above sound familiar? If so, it is important to revisit your website design as soon as possible so that you can rectify the errors and boost your SEO performance.
